When Nicky Hauser walks in on Tom having sex with a waiter, Nicky loses his boyfriend, his job, and his home all at once. He crashes on friends' couches but finds himself at loose ends. Although he's nearly 30, he's never settled on a true career, and now his love life is going nowhere too. He ends up with a series of housesitting gigs, and when his clients discover that he loves to clean, his services become very much in demand.

Nicky eventually takes a job as a live-in housekeeper for Spencer Cartwright. A busy computer consultant, Spencer is a slob whose house and wardrobe are messes. He and his wife divorced when he came out of the closet, but who's never found the time or courage to settle down with a man.

As Nicky sets Spencer's house in order, the two men find friendship. But, leery because of his past experiences, Nicky is hesitant to risk everything on love.
