Born In Fargate, Sheffield on 6th December 1816, the second son of Samuel Brown, a local builder and slater. Samuel was by no stretch of the imagination a man of means, it's fair to say he earnt a modest income by nineteenth century standards, a little more than most but not enough to keep him away from the drudgery of everyday toil.
