This book is a collection of Mangisi's stories about playing marbles as a boy growing up in Tonga. He describes all the types of marbles used such as old-style seeds and nuts as well as imported glass and ceramic ones. He discusses the rules of the game, played outside using a large circle outlined on the ground. And he shares the fun the boys had including their ways of outwitting their opponents and occasional raids, running off with all the marbles when the players were distracted. Mangisi writes in English and Tongan and his stories are published in parallel text to support readers immersion in their second language. He hopes that this will also allow parents and grandparents to read dynamically in both languages to encourage their family to learn Tongan.
