Memories from Australia Book 5 deals with a trip to see bit more of the Red Centre of Australia. To make best use of time we flew to Alice Springs and from there to Yulara. Thi is a very small settlement almost purely to cater for tourists wanting to see Uluru and Kata Tjuta (also known as the ‘Olgas”. There was a special display of lights set up neat Yluara which we wanted to se as well. This proved to be a little disappointing. Unlike the promotional material which showed Uluru and these lights at the same time, our visit occurred well after dark and so we had to stumble around with no view of the surroundings. Uluru was as magnificent as it has always been for us. Why is a great big badly weathered monolith so fascinating? KataTjuta is more fascinating, but is more difficult to see at its best. You have to be able to spend quite a few hours wandering around inside its perimeter: we just didn’t have the time for that. The major tourist aspect for this trip was to take a scenic flight to view the stunning scenery rom the air. So much of it is not appreciated from the ground. Its immensity is hidden when one can only see a short distance. Apart from a view of Kata Tjuta and Uluru from the air, we passed over Lake Amadeus, a huge salt lake. From there we feel to and around King’s Canyon. Then it was onto one of my favourite geological parts that I have seen in Australia: Gosses Bluff. It is an eroded (so much of Australia’s scenery gets that prefix) remains of a large meteorite impact. From the ground it is pretty amazing, but from the air …! As well as these highlights there are images of the other spectacular geology: long lines of parallel ridges, flat plains, eroded valleys and the ever-present every-varying desert vegetation. There is a 100 MB limit on eBooks and so the number of images in the book is limited. Hopefully readers will get a ‘taste’ of this amazingly varied countryside occupying the centre of the largest island on earth and the 7th largest continent. Have a read and enjoy the 91 still images and three short video clips which show some of the outstanding scenery and vegetation of the Red Centre of this fascinating country.
