Memories from Australia Book 7. An opportunity came up to travel to Darwin in October. This is close to the Wet Season and so the climate is hot and humid. Although the maximum temperature may only be 34°C and the minimum a balmy 25°C, the humidity is an energy sapping 85%. For the unacclimatised, almost any activity results in a sheen of sweat: entering the generally air-conditioned buildings causes quite a cold-sensation for a moment. The trip was short but there were opportunities to visit a couple of, to us, very interesting, places. This late in the year many tourist facilities are closed (so we assumed we were not the only ones who found it a bit humid). One which was open was the Territory Wildlife Park. This is a place where one can wonder around and visit the various displays which are quite a distance apart. Luckily, for unacclimatised, there is a regular bus going around the near-circular road. Opportunities to see some of the Northern Territories wildlife abound and some great opportunities to take photographs. Although they have trained birds which form their flight aviary, there is a lagoon where native and immigrant birds come and go as they please. The second tour involved a tour guide who firstly drove us along the Arnhem Highway east of Darwin to a spot where they have a tour boat cruising on a waterway: called the Corroboree Billabong Wetland. It is part of the Mary River wetland system. This was our first visit to this cruise and we will probably go back, it was very good and the range of birds and plants was just what one expects (hopes?) to see. At least on the water, the air is a bit cooler when the boat moves! There is a 100 MB limit on eBooks and so the number of images in the book is limited. Hopefully readers will get a ‘taste’ of this amazingly varied countryside occupying the far north of the largest island on earth and the 7th largest continent. Have a read and enjoy the 120 still images each with an accompanying explanatory page of text. This book was just before the start of the Wet Season and so we saw country which was going to be flooded and unaccessible. Have a read and hopefully enjoy some of the outstanding wildlife (some in captivity and some not), scenery and vegetation of the Top End of this fascinating country.
