Memories from Baltic States Book 3: This picture book, one of 4 about travels in Estonia, Latvia Lithuania and Poland, is a record of a guided tours through these countries. After the tours of Riga and the nearby castles, the guided tour took us south, by car, on our way to Lithuania. On the way we were taken to another of the architecture marvels of Latvia: Rundale Palace. This is some 80 kilometres from Riga. It is a totally renovated baroque palace from 1768. It also contains a garden which really needs to have a more dramatic name. “Garden” just doesn’t do it any justice at all. After our tour of what is now a grossly excessive home, we were droven on towards Lithuania and stopped at a rather unusual site. Called the ‘Hill of Crosses’ it is both astonishing and perhaps to some disturbing place. Certainly I think it might be unique. After our wander around this fascinating place we then drove to Vilnius where our Riga driver and our Latvian tour guide left us. As we had arrived in the afternoon, we had a chance to go walking in the vicinity of the hotel. The next day our guided tour of Vilnius commenced with a new driver and tour guide (like the first, these were excellent). Following this we were driven to Trakai Castle in the countryside and then onto Kaunas to the northeast of Vilnius. Many of the places have received, or are reaching a lot of attention in the form of extensive renovations. These incorporate as much of the originals as possibly can be. Restoring and maintaining history! There are four short video clips which give a slightly different perspective from the still images by revealing the context of some of the still shots. There are 81 still images, which should give a sense of the sights seen. The file size limit of the eBook format is the reason for 5 books. The original photographs (taken by author, an amateur, with amateur equipment) are very large and so need compressing to fit in the file limit.
