Memories from Southern Africa Book 3: This picture book is the third of the series travelling in Southern Africa, of 7, which cover some touring - mostly guided - mostly of South Africa, but also a trip to Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe and a safari excursion in Botswana. After staying overnight in Oudtshoorn which is over the mountains from the coast, we were then driven to Mossel, a coastal resort town. Here we visited the Bartolomeu Dias Museum which includes a full-size replica of his ship. The drive was to eventually reach Cape Town and was essentially following the famed Garden Route. Again there was some stunning scenery along the coast. Further stunning views were had at Hermanus further west. Sadly this famed whale-watching location didn’t have any blubbery visitors for us. We were on a tight schedule by this time as we had brow-beaten our ever-willing exceptional guide for some ‘optional’ time-consuming minor side trips. We then drove to Cape Town and had some really delightful views of the mountain ranges on the way, such as the Hottentot-Holland Mountains which skirt the coastal plain and some of the views of the region of CapeTown at dusk. The next day was our tour of the famed Table Mountain. It lived up to its reputation especially as the weather was great: a clear blue sky. Needless to say, lots of photographs of the top and the views down of the coast. Afterwards we went to the Castle of Good Hope which was built in 1679. Had a stroll through Cape Town streets which took us to the Company’s Garden (as in the Dutch East India Company). Following this our walk continued to the region of Bo-Kaap. Now rather well-to-do, it was originally accommodation for slaves and it included a brief look inside some that were maintained to reflect their origins. This book contains 81 still images and each has a minimal accompanying descriptive text. The file size limit of the eBook format is the reason for 5 books. The original photographs (taken by the author, an amateur, with amateur equipment) are very large and so need compressing to fit in the file limit. If you have wondered what such a trip might be like, have a read. If you just would like see an amateur view of the coast and hinterland of south-east Africa and Cape Town, have a read, If you have wondered what such a trip might entail, have a read. Ideally, have a read and get as much enjoyment as the author did in being able to collect these ‘Memories from Southern Africa’.
