The pieces in this book are taken from three collections of english keyboard music dating from the seventeenth century. These untitled collections are identified as MS Rs.1185, MS Res. 1186, and MS Res. 1186 bis, and are housed at the Biblioteque Nationale in Paris. Most of the compositions bear the titles of the popular melodies on which they are based. These titles are often an indication of the character of the piece. For instance, "Jumpe At My Cozen" indicates a lively character while "With My Love My Life Was Nestled" implies a serene disposition. The twenty solos and four duets are organized according to·ease of playing. They should prove rewarding to both the beginning and the intermediate student.
