To find God a 'client' prepares to be buried alive. A Korean woman quietly puts the finishing touches to tidying her employer's house, hoping to shame the Japanese invader. Choirboys wait wordlessly for their cue, shut up high inside the dome of Florence cathedral. Richly evoking times past through historical figures and otherworldly imagery, this moving and playful collection of fictions explores the many facets of silence, all connected by a web of echoes. Silence is a storytelling tour de force from one of Australia's finest writers. Rodney Hall is one of Australia's finest writers. He has won the Miles Franklin Award twice for Just Relations and The Grisly Wife and many of his novels and poems have been published internationally. His acclaimed memoir popeye never told you was published in 2010. He lives in Melbourne.

Rodney Hall

Rodney Hall is one of our foremost authors.

He left school at sixteen for family reasons, already determined to become a writer and to educate himself by experience. Two years later he was called up for National Service. Afterwards, when the opportunity arose, he sailed from Brisbane to Genoa and set out, with £112 in his pocket, to walk around Europe.

He was thirty-one when he enrolled at university and his formative literary influences-quite at odds with those of his contemporaries-were already set. He studied Old English and the cultural history of India while supporting himself as an ABC radio actor and scriptwriter.

Since then he has won two Miles Franklin Awards, his novels have been widely published and translated into many languages, and he has been twice presented with the gold medal of the Australian Literature Society.
