Why does heart-rending pain lurk in the back of the wealthy Countess of Sinclair’s eyes?

Captain Howard’s life changes forever from the moment he meets Kate, the intriguing Countess and resolves to banish her pain.

Although the air sizzles when widowed Kate, victim of an abusive marriage meets Edward Howard, a captain in Queen Anne’s navy, she has no intention of ever marrying again.

However, when Kate becomes better acquainted with the Captain she realises he is the only man who understands her grief and can help her to untangle her past, and help her regain that which should be hers by right.

Maggi Anderson ~ 5 Star

Rosemary Morris has a wonderful understanding of this period of history and she adroitly evokes the period her characters inhabit with all its pomp and ceremony. It is rich in its detail of customs, classes, servants, beliefs, London life, food, interiors and the exquisite fashions.

Rosemary Morris ties up the subplots neatly and everything falls satisfactorily into place. I was rooting for Edward and Katherine to find happiness together in this older woman/younger man romance. There's no childish squabbling between the hero and heroine here. The author's mature understanding of human nature enriches the romance, as it does in her other novels, making The Captain and the Countess a very enjoyable read. ~

5 Star ~ Mrs Jennifer M. Black

Rosemary Morris lives and breathes the late Stuart period of history. The world she describes, in which Morals and Rules were known and adhered to, has vanished now, but her characters speak and behave in keeping with what we know of the customs of the well-born of the time, which makes a refreshing change to the huge amount of historical fiction where young girls behave and think as they would in this century.

If you enjoy sentences put together with care and grace, dialogue that sparkles without falling into clichés, slang and platitudes; if you want a storyline with genuine twists and turns and a happy ending that comes as a surprise and does not jar against the habits of the time, then this book will give you, as it did me, great pleasure.

A certainty that comes with reading any book by this talented author is knowing Rosemary Morris is a stickler for portraying the constricting customs of her chosen time period. Her characters of a London in 1706 reside in a world far removed from the norms of today, ensuring her books are a history lesson in themselves, right down to the clothes the characters wear to their everyday habits.
The Countess of Sinclair, Kate, is suspicious of Captain Howard’s motives from the first when he declares his devotion to her. Having suffered brutally at the hands of her deceased husband Kate therefore vows never to marry again. But Captain Edward Howard sets out to prove to her that all men are not bullies who treat their wives as chattels. Edward is instantly aware of the pain carried in her heart, and sets out to prove to her in the best way possibly that despite their differences in age, he is intent on ensuring her happiness by regaining the precious family her husband was intent on denying her.
