Much like the 3rd book in the series, Greenwitch, The Grey King is a dark fantasy that draws heavily on Welsh legends.
Will Stanton travels to Wales to recuperate from a magical illness, and as the rain starts to fall heavily, he must uncover yet more secrets of the Wild magic, the untamed forces not supporting anyone in the battle between Light and Dark.
This is probably the weakest in the series, solely for the fact that Susan Cooper is building up for the epic finale. She draws almost too much from real-life legends, filling the novel with unnecessary detail drawn straight from an encyclopedia. Nevertheless, by the end of the novel the stage is set for the final epic battle.
