The Philosophy of Mystery is a book by the English surgeon and writer Walter Cooper Dendy, first published in 1841. It is a treatise on supernatural and mysterious topics, such as dreams, ghosts, fairy mythology, mysterious sounds, lycanthropy, nightmares, succubi and illusions. Going into detail about each, Dendy explores the background and possible explanations for these phenomena, including insights into mythology, prophecies and coincidences, as well as discussing mental causes. There is also a chapter on the mysticism of poets such as William Blake. The author had already written a book on dreams and his fascination with the mysteries of the subconscious and unconscious mind is clear in this work.
