This new fourth edition of the TNM Atlas reflects the changes in the TNM system introduced by the recently published fifth edition of the TNM Classification of Malignant Tumours [1]. The most important ad­ ditions and modifications are: - A revised classification of nasopharyngeal carcinoma reflecting the needs of radiation oncologists - Changes in the regionallymph node classification of gastrie carci­ noma - Expansion of the soft tissue tumour classification - A new classification of fallopian tube carcinoma and of gestational trophoblastie tumours - A revised testis tumour classification - Important changes in the classification of prostate and urinary bladder tumours reflecting advances in urology The editorial board has changed: Dr. Spiessi, the editor-in-chief and "father" of the TNM Atlas, has retired, as have Dr. Beahrs and Dr. Scheibe; Dr. Wittekind has joined. The editors wish to express many thanks to Bernd Spiessl for his great contributions to the development and promotion of the TNM Atlas. We are grateful to Dr. Beahrs and Dr. Scheibe for their work on the editorial board as weIl as for their other TNM activities. The editorial board has tried to follow the successful concept devel­ oped by Bernd Spiessl to provide agraphie aid for the practical appli­ cation of the TNM classification system. The TNM classifieation, as presented and illustrated in this edition, corresponds exactly to the fifth edition of the UICC TNM Classification of Malignant Tumours [1] and the fifth edition of the AJCC Cancer Staging Manual [2].
