When Dorothy Height was a girl, Black people weren't allowed to do the things white people could do. Because of that, Dorothy wasn't allowed to swim at a local swimming pool, and she wasn't allowed to attend Barnard College, either. Dorothy knew that was wrong, and she worked hard to help change laws and practices so that Black people and all women would be treated more fairly. She spoke out for voting rights for all and against lynching, and she fought for equality in where people could live, work, play, and go to school. Dorothy received both the Congressional Gold Medal and the Presidential Medal of Freedom for her persistence in the important work she did to help make the United States a better country for everyone.
