Australia's official First World War correspondent, Charles Bean, saw more of the Australian Imperial Force's actions and battles on the Western Front than anyone.

Bean's extensive private wartime diaries, held by the Australian War Memorial, form a unique and personal record of his experiences and observations throughout the war and were the basis of his monumental multi-volume official war history.

While a selection of his diaries relating to the Gallipoli campaign have been available for some time, Bean's Western Front diaries are published here for the first time, edited by esteemed historian Peter Burness, and accompanied by over 500 remarkable photographs, sketches and maps.

A large and excellent book that gives a personal 1st hand perspective of the action and also includes first hand discussions with all senior officers up the level of Monash and Haigue
It should be read by anyone with a serious interest in WW1 and should be in all school libraries.

Peter Burness the editor, of this magnificent volume has created an instant classic of Australian military history which should be an essential inclusion for every school and public library collection in the country. If you were to buy one book on the Australian's experience on the Western Front then it should be this. A very detailed look at the man that helped bring our military history to the people, from his own records collected at war. Makes a great companion piece to the Official WW1 history set.
